I am huge believer in the use of checklists. I create and use them for a number of tasks.
This may seem a bit extreme, but I find that my mind tends to process too many things simultaneously. When that happens, I lose track of where I am at in a multi-step task. The checklist tends to force my brain to focus on the important things that need to be done, helping me ensure I don't miss something critical.
I highly recommend the book The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. Dr. Gawande does a much better job explaining the utility of checklists than I do. I just know they work well for me.
These are the ones I use when there is a high potential for a major severe weather event, such as a tropical storm or hurricane. Depending on where you live, the type of home you have, and your living situation, these lists may not be of use to you. I share them with the hopes it gives you a starting point.
I created this PowerPoint for a presentation I did a preparedness conference a few years ago. You may find it useful.
